Zhon In this study, a rapidly solidified aluminum alloy was compared with beryllium copper and 6061 aluminum alloys in terms of their wear rates, hardness and performance as mold insert materials. A Vickers hardness measuring machine and a tribometer were used to determine the hardness values and wear rates of the materials. Three sets of mold inserts were made of these materials, and the insert surfaces and the molded plastic lens surfaces were characterized using a scanning electron microscope and a surface profilometer, respectively. The investigation results indicate that the BeCu alloy has the lowest wear rate, while aluminum 6061-T6 has the highest wear rate. Although the rapidly solidified aluminum alloy is not as hard as the BeCu alloy, the differences between their wear rates and hardness values are not as great as the differences between aluminum 6061-T6 and the BeCu alloy. The results also indicate that the rapidly solidified aluminum alloy performs much better than aluminum 6061-T6 in molding of plastic lenses and is comparable to the BeCu alloy. It is able to attain finer surfaces of the molded plastic lenses. This is an important finding, and this means that the rapidly solidified aluminum alloy can replace the BeCu alloy as a good mold insert material, because beryllium (Be) is a toxic element. The finding gives the industry a better choice for selection of mold insert materials. 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The effect of insert conformity and material on total knee replacement wear
The mean average life is increasing; therefore, there is a need to increase the lifetime of the prostheses. To fulfil this requirement, new prosthetic designs and materials are being introduced. Two of the design parameters that may affect wear of total knee replacements, and hence the expected lifetime, are the insert conformity and material. Computational models have been used extensively for...
متن کاملSurface Roughness, Machining Force and FlankWear in Turning of Hardened AISI 4340 Steel with Coated Carbide Insert: Cutting Parameters Effects
The current experimental study is to investigate the effects of process parameters (cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut) on performance characteristics (surface roughness, machining force and flank wear) in hard turning of AISI 4340 steel with multilayer CVD (TiN/TiCN/Al2O3) coated carbide insert. Combined effects of cutting parameter (v, f, d) on performance outputs (Ra, Fm and VB) ar...

Statement of Problem: The relatively poor wear resistance of dental composite in stress bearing posterior situations has restricted wider clinical application of this restorative material. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the three body abrasive wear of a dental composite based on a new filler (leucite: KAl Si2O6) and to compare it with the wear resistance of a composite based on ...
متن کاملPEEK and CFR-PEEK as alternative bearing materials to UHMWPE in a fixed bearing total knee replacement: An experimental wear study
New bearing materials for total joint replacement have been explored as the need to improve longevity and enhance performance is driven by the changing demands of the patient demographic. Carbon-reinforced PEEK has demonstrated good wear characteristics in experimental wear simulation in both simple geometry pin-on-plate studies and in total hip joint replacement. Carbon reinforced PEEK CFR-PEE...
متن کاملA New Procedure of Impact Wearevaluation of Mill Liner (RESEARCH NOTE)
The significant costs insert on mineral processes due to mill liner wear including the labor costs, price of material and shut down periods. Therefore, the study of this phenomenon is economically important to optimize the mill operating conditions and liner profile design to decrease the wear rate. There is no appropriate and applicable research on impact wear evaluation of mill liners. In the...
